INTERNATIONAL CALLING

While being in Spain, either for holidays or for longer periods, you may wish to call your family and friends at home as well as your new friends in Spain . Furthermore it will be very important to be available by phone, when buying Spanish property, looking for work in Spain or when even starting your own business in Spain.

International callingOne possibility is to have a Spanish mobile phone. You must not necessarily buy a mobile phone in Spain as you can normally use your old one, provided that it is a GSM one what it will probably be if you are a European citizen or if you bought your mobile phone in any European country. GSM is the Global System for Mobile Communications, originally a European standard for digital mobile telephony, it is today one of the leading digital cellular systems in use in over 100 countries. In case that you are no EU-citizen you should check whether you can use your mobile phone in Spain and other European countries before you start your trip or even your new live in Spain. In the case that your mobile does not work in Europe you should consider buying or renting a new one. When you are staying in Spain for a shorter period it is advisable to rent a mobile phone if you feel you need one. In case that your stay in Spain will last longer than 6 weeks at any rate it will be cheaper to buy a Spanish mobile phone.

When you are buying your Spanish mobile phone, you should first decide whether you prefer to have a mobile phone contract or a prepaid-card. Then you should choose a provider, the three biggest in Spain are Telefónica Movistar, Vodafone and Amena. If you are contracting a mobile phone service the price you will have to pay to take and keep the phone is cheaper than buying a mobile phone with a prepaid-card and also the call rates you have to pay per minute are quite a bit cheaper. The disadvantages of a contract are that you have to provide some security to the provider, as for example a bank account and your NIE number ( Número de Identidad de Extranjero ). You have also to pay a monthly service charge for having a contract but this charge is normally not too expensive.
