If when you are moving to Spain you decide that you want to bring your UK car over permanently there are a few things that you need to do in order to keep your car legal in Spain. When you first come over you have 6months in which you are able to drive your car in Spain without having to have Spanish number plates or tax however if planning to stay in Spain for longer than 6 months then you need to start changing aspects of you car . If living in Spain for more than 183 days then you are required to get a tarjeta de residencia (residency permit) and with this you will be able to change your driving licence to a Spanish driving licence. This can be done in 2 ways; you can either get this done by having your driving licence stamped by the traffic authorities or you can exchange your UK driving licence for a Spanish driving licence. The latter of these 2 ways is the most preferred with people who wish to drive abroad. If you are going to get your driving licence stamped then you need to make sure that you have your driving licence and a copy, your residencia and a copy and also the application form completely filled out. If you are going to completely change your driving licence to a Spanish licence then you will need to take with you 3 passport photos, your driving licence and a photocopy, your recidencia and a photocopy and also the application form completely filled out. Other factors that you have to change when you have been in Spain for more than 183 days is are the licence plates on your car and that you need to pay the special vehicle registration tax. (impuesto municipal sobre circulación de vehículos). In order to obtain these documents a licence plates you need to get a Certificate of Permanent Export (V756) from the DVLA in the UK. When you register your car in Spain you will incur a tax of about 13% of the value of your car. The average cost of the yearly tax of your car in Spain is about €60 however it does depend on the age and the strength of your car (the engine size) it also varies from city to city.
