WHAT DO YOU NEED TO DRIVE IN SPAIN?

If you want to take your car with you, you should have all necessary documents relating to the car with you (legally certified copies are ok). As a EU citizen it is also very important to have your passport with you when driving because you can be fined driving a foreign registered vehicle in Spain without a current passport. You need also a current driving licence; the best would be the EU type.

After moving to Spain you have to register your car so that you can get your Spanish plates. This has to happen within 30 days of your registering to stay in Spain for more than 6 months.

Driving in Spain When driving in Spain you need:
  1. Two EU approved red warning triangles.

  2. Approved reflective jackets that must be worn by all passengers outside the car at any time and any place but not in urban areas. The jackets must be kept inside the car so that they van be put on before getting out. A good place to store them is the pocket in the back of the front seat because they must be visible from outside of the car.

  3. A set of spare lamps for your car and the tools to change them.

  4. If you wear corrective glasses for driving then you need also a spare pair.

  5. Your number plate should be an EU plate containing your country code.

  6. Valid insurance cover.
