BEFORE LEAVING YOUR COUNTRY

Moving to SpainWhen you are a citizen of the EU you won't have a lot of difficulties to bring your belongings to Spain because there are not many restrictions. You can bring all your furniture as well as your pets to Spain without any special declaration.

If you want to take your furniture with you, you should notice that a lot of the Spanish properties are furnished when they are sold or rented out. If that is the case you should organize storage for your belongings. Normally it is possible to store your goods at your movers' storage facilities.

It is very important that you will have all your personal documents with you, such as passport, birth and marriage certificates, medical reports or driving licence. You should also copy each and keep them in a safe place. You should save all moving receipts because many moving expenses are tax deductible.

Before leaving your home country you should notify authorities, financial institutions, building societies of your new address and telephone number and make sure that, if necessary, your post will be forwarded. It is important to have copies of all medical, school, dental, veterinary, legal and accounting records as well as all important official papers like insurance, will, deeds or stocks. It is also important to close your local bank accounts and withdraw all funds. You should also contact your insurance agent to transfer or cancel coverage.

Do not forget to contact the utility companies to arrange disconnect dates for gas, water, electric, cable TV and telephone but make sure to have access to important utilities until the day of removal. Remember to have utilities turned on in your Spanish property.

If you have small children you should arrange child care at the day you are moving to Spain. If you have older children you should have some information about the Spanish school system and about international as well as Spanish schools in the area you are going to live. International schools make it easier to follow because the spoken language is English but if you plan to stay in Spain for a longer period you should consider a Spanish school to provide your children the possibility to learn the Spanish language in a quicker and more effective way.
