NEWSPAPERS AND PRESS IN SPAIN
If you are staying in Spain for longer periods or even living in Spain then
you might be interested in the press in Spain. There are a number of
international and national newspapers available.
It
does not matter where in Spain you are, all around the country you can buy a
newspaper or a magazine from your home Country at one of the numerous newspaper
kiosks. If you are living in a Spanish tourist region or a bigger city, you
will usually have a wider range of international newspapers and magazines to
choose from but if not then you will always have the possibility to read them
online.
There are also some special Spanish regional or national newspapers in English
available like Costa Blanca News or Costa del Sol News. You can also find a lot
of English-language lifestyle magazines for your region elected to stay like
Barcelona Connect, a free magazine for visitors and foreign residents in
Barcelona.
If you already speak the Spanish language or if you are going to learn Spanish
in Spain then you may also be interested to read some Spanish-language
newspapers or magazines like the leading Spanish newsmagazine Tiempo.
You can find a lot of international magazines having a special Spanish edition
like Capital, Geo, Vogue, Cosmopolitan, Rolling Stone, Men's Health or Car and
Driver, so that you can read your preferred magazine also in Spain.
The Spanish magazine market is ruled by TV guides and weekly gossip magazines
concentrating on the live of the famous people such as the legendary Spanish
¡Hola! magazine that has established the successful British edition Hello!.
To update your knowledge about what is going on in Spain you should read one of
the about 155 Spanish daily newspapers providing you with the latest regional,
national and international news.
Most of the leading national Spanish newspapers are printed in Madrid, the
Spanish capital, as well as in Barcelona but there are also important and
powerful regional ones, especially in Catalonia and the Basque Country,
influencing the local and national life. Some of the major national daily
newspapers have regional editions in big cities like Valencia or Seville.
The majority of the newspapers in Spain are in Spanish but among the regional
ones there are also some in Catalan, Galician and Basque language or some
bilingual ones.
Although only about 25% of the Spanish population read the
daily press from Monday to Friday, the Sunday circulation is much higher
because in Spain there is a long tradition of Sunday newspapers and people are
reading them for hours sitting in a park. But in general Spain has a poor
reading tradition partly because there is no yellow press (popular daily
newspapers) as in other European Countries.
Because of the low readership figures there is a lot of competition between
Spanish newspapers. Therefore they have a lot of editorial promotions and most
of them have also an Internet presence with original web-based content but for
some of them you have to pay a subscription fee.
